I turned 30 last month…. And it feels pretty much exactly the same as 29… I think landmark birthdays like this are only landmarks on paper and any trepidation about leaving my 20’s vanished when I realised I really didn’t care!
The only thing that was different to other birthdays was that I had planned an adventure in the wilds of Scotland to celebrate the landmark in style. I spent a weekend in an eco cabin with a bunch of friends in the Cairngorms before travelling on with my sister and her partner across to the west cost.
The highlight for me musically was that I managed to come up with the first ideas for a song on the last day of my 20’s whilst driving around the Applecross peninsula looking for a suitable place to wild camp for the night! I was particularly pleased about this as normally, when I write songs, the music comes first and I build vocal lines on top before finally honing the lyrics so they actually make sense (instead of the random words I use to fit around the melody to begin with).
Once I had the idea in my head, I recorded a rough version on my phone whilst walking up a hill in the wind and the second I was back with a guitar, I wrote the rest of a song called “The Road” and I cant wait to get back into the studio and get it recorded as I have a good feeling about this one!
Tenor Guitar
Since discovering the music of Seth Lakeman and other folk artist, I have admired the sound of the Tenor guitar. Being completely honest, I didn’t know that such an instrument existed before this point but the second I started playing it, I knew was this an instrument I would enjoy.
I feel I still need to learn how to play it properly but I have already been working on some ideas and hopefully when it comes to writing my next album, I will be able to share some of the work with you!
