The video was a collaborative piece which loosely tells the story of the song… with a few twists… and a sea monster!
I started out discussing the ideas with the friend I recorded the song with originally, Jamie Massie and then from the initial idea of shadow puppets, we ended up creating a magical world of cut out silhouette people!
It was very much trial and error to get the video to look right as it was difficult to get the right amount of light onto the paper screen without leaving obvious light bulb shapes… In the end, we opted for a frame and huddled in a dark corner of the room to film the initial movement sequences with the waves created by rolling up another sheet of crate paper.
The outdoor playing sequences were filmed in my back garden against the wall. The plan was to capture the shadow of me playing using the fire light but unfortunately, it wasn’t strong enough to get a good shadow on the wall so we had to improvise with torch light/phone lights as well as the fire… As we had already built a fire in my beautiful fire pit (created by Black Fox Metalcraft), it seemed a shame to waste it and we probably ended up with more playing shots than we originally planned for but when something looks so good, it is hard to ignore.
The main characters were designed by another artistic friend, Lexi Govan and to make the video, Jay cut out an obscene amount of characters with a scalpel! In the end, the majority of the shots were a solo effort as I was languishing in a hospital bed but it definitely cheered me up to see the amazing results of his work! The final touch was from yet another friend (I am lucky to know so many talented people), John Lloyd, who helped a lot with the colour grading and tied the piece together.
I am really happy with how the video turned out and wanted to thank Jay, John and Lexi for their help in creating something awesome 🙂
